Everyone fell in love with Khruangbin two years ago with Con Todo El Mundo released two years ago (reviewed here). After that, the popularity of the Texan trio soared due to their musical fusion of psychedelic rock, Thai funk, disco, dub and world music that everyone is raving about. After a collaborative EP with local soulman Leon Bridges, the trio is finally back to ignite this summer under the name Mordechai.
Something new slips into this record. Khruangbin has a reputation for taking us through different lands and eras with their totally instrumental compositions. On Mordechai, they do not hesitate to incorporate the voice of the bassist Laura Lee, that's for the novelty. It is with tracks such as "First Class" that opens the ball but also the rhythmic "Time (You and I)" and "If There Is No Question" that remind the ethereal and cinematographic character of bands like BADBADNOTGOOD or El Michels Affair.
That said, Khruangbin remains equal to himself when it comes to taking us to the four corners of the world with the Tuareg blues accents of "Connaissais de Face" or the oriental or even Anatolian "Pelota". Mordechai is full of nuggets of all kinds so much the trio is in its element that it is soulful ("One To Remember", "Dearest Alfred") or funky ("So We Won't Forget") showing that the Texan trio does not hesitate to explore new corners without betraying its origins. And we needed it for this beginning of summer and we are not disappointed.
